Ghana’s Black Princesses were beaten 1-0 by their New Zealand counterparts in their opener of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
An 89th minute goal by Tayla Christensen ensured that New Zealand acquired all three points to go top of Group D.
The match was fully entertaining, played at a good tempo but, New Zealand’s Nadia Olla, was by far, the busier of the two goalkeepers and produced several key saves.
The Black Princesses could not take their chances as the first half ended goalless.
Ghana kept knocking at the door in the second half but their efficiency in the attacking third was poor. The clearest opening of the match saw Wasila Diwura-Soale latch onto a midfield turnover and run clear, but Olla came out to make a brave diving block at her feet.
Then came substitute Christensen, who scored a dramatic last-minute winner to help New Zealand to a hard-fought 1-0 win.In another fixture, the USA and France were engaged in a goalless stalemate. The next round of matches is on Thursday, when Ghana faces France whilst New Zealand face an uphill task against the USA.
